Allopathic medicine and allopathy (from Greek á¼?λλος, állos, other, different + πÎ¬ϑος, páthos, suffering) are terms coined by Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy to describe the traditional western medicine approach to medicine: working to relieve disease symptoms rather than attack disease causes. Generally, allopathic medicine refers to "the broad category of medical practice that is sometimes called Western medicine, biomedicine, scientific medicine, or modern medicine".
Allopathic Medicine and Allopathy Modern Definition
Webster’s dictionary defines allopathic as, “relating to or being a system of medicine that aims to combat disease by using remedies (as drugs or surgery) which produce effects that are different from or incompatible with those of the disease being treated”.
In general, allopathic medicine treats illness with drugs that will reverse the symptom a patient is experiencing. For example, if a patient has a headache, medications are used to stop the headache pain.
Allopathic medicine and allopathy are often terms for regular medicine in a context of traditional medicine such as Ayurveda, as well as in a context of complementary and alternative medicine such as homeopathy However, many aspects of traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurveda are allopathic in that they act by working to abate patients symptoms.
Allopathic medicine, or allopathy, is the most common approach to medical treatment across the world, although alternative approaches are increasing in popularity.
