The main purpose of circuit workouts are to give you more variety, keep your heart pumping and give you the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Circuit Training Benefits

Circuit training is an excellent way to improve mobility, strength and stamina.

Circuit training has been made popular by places like Curves and Ladies Workout Express. In circuit training you have several pieces of strength training equipment interspersed with aerobic equipment like steps or jogging pads. It has all the benefits of both cardiovascular and strength training workouts.

Types of Circuit Training

There are many types of circuit training, but the most conventional way is performing 8 to 12 strength exercises that are completed one exercise after another.

Each exercise is performed for a specified number of repetitions or for a prescribed time before moving on to the next exercise.

The exercises within each circuit are separated by brief, timed rest intervals, and each circuit is separated by a longer rest period.

The total number of circuits performed during a training session may vary from two to six depending on your training level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), your period of training (preparation or competition) and your training objective.

For example, one would perform squats, then with no rest go straight into lunges, then leg extensions, then leg curls, then calf raises, etc.

There are many ways to structure your circuit training. You can make up a workout that is only upper body or lower body. You could incorporate sports drills with strength exercise in between. There are endless possibilities when constructing a circuit workout.

Circuit Training Goals

Typically circuit training is a type of interval training aimed at losing weight and inches, however it can also be used to add strength, endurance and/or to build muscle as well.

The main purpose of circuit workouts are to give you more variety, keep your heart pumping and give you the best results in the shortest amount of time.

How Circuit Training Works

Circuit training combines 6-10 exercises that are completed one right after the other, with little or no rest in between.

One objective of circuit training is to go all ou, each rep, and through each exercice without slowing down or resting.

There are many variations of circuit training where exercises are completed for a specified time (like 1 minute). During circuit training to get optimal benefits the rest period should be no more than 30 seconds before moving on to the next exercise. Once you complete all exercises, that is considered one circuit.

The total number of circuits you complete can vary and will be determined by your level ogf fitness, as well as your desire.

For beginners, start with 30 seconds per exercise and increase the time as you get stronger. Another way to progress is to shorten your rest in between exercises and circuits.

Circuit Training is Great for Beginners

Circuit training is great for beginners just getting started. Why? Because it allows you to build some total body strength while also working on your endurance. This can be great for a number of sports as long as you perform exercises specifically for what you want to accomplish.  

Circuit Training Can Increase Cardio Endurance and Stimulate Weight Loss

This circuit workout is a great calorie-burner. Circuit training moves fast and can be designed to involves high intensity cardio (any activity of your choice) as well as combination strength moves involving both upper and lower body.

Circuit Training Can Break Plateaus 

By increasing the workload and shortening the workout time it increases intensity. Increasing intensity is a great way to make gains, get in shape quicker and it can help even the most seasoned person break plateaus.

Circuit Training Can Increase Interest 

Regardless of your goals, circuit training can be a great workout simply because of the variety. Running on a treadmill for 30 minutes or doing the same old machines can get boring over time. Incorporating variety can help renew your interest in training.

Planning is the key to Success

  1. Pick exercises to work each muscle group.
  2. Choose an order that works the primary and larger muscle group first (Back, before biceps, chest before triceps)
  3. Try to include exercises for agility and endurance (like jumping side-to-side over a phone book)for overall all fitness (muscle growth, muscle tone, balance and cardiovascular fitness)

Descending Metabolic Circuit Training For Fat Loss and Conditioning

circuit trainingCircuit training has been around for decades. Traditionally used by athletes, but nowadays it's becoming more and more popular and used by personal trainers and fitness enthusiasts.

Circuit training is an excellent metabolic conditioning tool for anyone seeking fat loss and or improved physical conditioning. Circuit training basically combines resistance training with interval training, that's what's so beautiful about circuits!

I'm sure everybody is fairly well familiarized with traditional circuit training protocols whereby you perform a group of exercises (anywhere from 6-12 exercises) for a prescribed number of repetitions or for a certain time period. Moving from one exercise to the next until all the exercises are completed, then resting before starting the next round of the circuit and usually anywhere from 2-6 rounds of circuits are performed depending on how many exercises are used to form the circuit.

Now I want to introduce you to what I like to call 'Descending Metabolic Circuits'. Descending metabolic circuits are real easy to understand, but challenging to perform. Let me quickly explain them to you.

To explain the descending metabolic circuit set up let me use a 4 exercise based circuit and I'll use exercises most people should be familiar with. I will use push ups, inverted body rows, dumbbell front squats and alternating lunges using just bodyweight.

What you do for round 1 or circuit 1 is to perform 10 reps for each exercise, with the exception of the lunges (perform 20 repetitions - 10 per side) with little to no rest between exercises (ideally no rest, but this will depend on your own ability level) until you finish all four exercises.

So that's one round down, now you will quickly (again little to no rest) start round 2 or circuit 2, but this time you will drop 1 repetition per exercise, meaning you will perform 9 push ups, 9 inverted body rows, 9 dumbbell front squats and 18 (9 per side) alternating bodyweight lunges.

All you are doing is dropping one rep for each exercise per round. Usually you will perform a full 10 rounds or 10 circuits, which means that when you get to circuit 10 you will be performing just 1 push up, 1 inverted body row, 1 dumbbell front squat and 2 alternating bodyweight lunges.

The key is to rest as little as possible, but ideally take no rest, between exercises and between the rounds. Your aim is to complete the entire 10 rounds as fast as possible. It's a great mini workout challenge.

What makes these descending metabolic circuits so effective is the fact that you get a full body resistance training and interval based workout in at the same time, and also the most important thing for metabolism boosting purposes is that you will be encouraged to FINISH FAST!!!
