Grape Juice Far Better than OJ for Health

Orange juice (OJ) may not be your juice of choice for breakfast anymore if you listen to a woman_drinking_grape_juicenew study by University of Glasgow researchers and published in a recent edition of the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.

The new study suggests that consumer pass on the orange juice (OJ) and instead choose grape juice, apple juice, or even cranbery juice if they are interested in improving and protecting their health. 

According the study grape juice is better than orange juice (OJ) juice to drink, offering fwelch_grape_juice.jpgar more health benefits in the areas of  disease prevention.The researchers found that grape juice had the highest concentration of antioxidants - chemicals which help to neutralize unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals. If left unchecked, free radicals can harm cells, prematurely aging cells, and causing a variety of disease diseases and conditions , including heart diseaseAlzheimer's diseasedementiacancer  as well as help delay premature aging .

It has long been known that fruit contains antioxidants called polyphenols, but researchers at the University of Glasgow wanted to see how much remained once fruit had been turned into juice.

In the University of Glasgow study 13  juices were from a supermarket, including those made from pomegranates, oranges, grapes, grapefruit, apples, pineapples and tomatoes were tested antioxidant_juicesfor antioxidants content. They were a mixture of 'not from concentrate' and 'concentrated' varieties.

According to Alan Crozier, a professor of both human nutrition and plant biochemistry who led the study, "Purple grape juice made with Concord grapes contains the highest and broadest range of polyphenols as well as having the highest antioxidant capacity. Other high-ranking products include cloudy apple juice and cranberry juice drink." 

The juices contained as many antioxidants as Beaujolais red wine.The next best drink was Copella's cloudy apple juice.

The winning juice, Welch's Purple Grape, was made from a variety of grapes known as Concord which are native to North America. The next best drink was Copella's cloudy apple juice. Like grape juice both apple juice, which is good for a source of fiber , and cranberry juice, which promotes a healthy urinary tract functioning, contained a higher antioxidant activity than orange juice.

The Darker the Berry the Sweeter the Health Benefits

Generally the darker juices were best, with purple grapes having the highest levels of ptypes_of_juices.jpgolyphenols, according to the study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.The researchers said that it might not just be the amount of antioxidants, but also the type contained in a juice, that determine its potential health benefits.

Green Tea Polyphenols (GTP) Beat Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Related Brain Deficits

Researchers examined the effects green tea polyphenols (GTP), administered through drinking water, on rats who were intermittently deprived of oxygen during 12-hour “night”box_of_green_tea cycles, mimicking the intermittent hypoxia (IH) that humans with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) experience.

 

People with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) have been reported to have increased markers of oxidative stress and exhibit architectural changes in their brain tissue in areas involved in learning and memory. Chronic IH in rats produce similar neurological deficit patterns.

"OSA has been increasingly recognized as a serious and frequent health condition with potential long-term morbidities that include learning and psychological disabilities [...]," wrote David Gozal, M.D., professor and director of Kosair Children's Hospital Research Institute at the University of Louisville, lead author of the article. "A growing body of evidence suggests that the adverse neurobehavioral consequences imposed by IH stem, at least in part, from oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling cascades."

GTPs are known to possess anti-oxidant properties, acting as a free radical scavengers, and research has shown that the compounds may reduce the risk of a variety of different diseases.

"Recent studies have demonstrated the neuroprotective activity of GTP in animal models of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease ," wrote Dr. Gozal.

In this study, the researchers divided 106 male rats into two groups that underwent intermittent oxygen depletion during the 12-hour "night" cycle for 14 days. One group received drinking water treated with GTP; the other received plain drinking water.

Nutrition Supplements May Not Improve Exercise Performance But Can Reduce Muscle Damage

dietary_supplementsA new study in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research suggests that drinking a carbohydrate and protein supplement prior to and during exercise does not improve exercise performance. However, subjects who consumed the supplement did experience significantly reduced muscle damage compared to control subjects.

The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research study examined the effects of consuming a carbohydrate and protein supplement prior to, during, and following an intense resistance exercise workout. The results indicate that a carbohydrate and protein supplement can significantly reduce muscle damage during acute bouts of resistance exercise, potentially allowing athletes to participate in their next high-intensity exercise bout in a shorter period of time. This finding can also apply to novice lifters and other individuals who regularly engage in resistance training.

The study authors are careful to note that although the supplement did not appear to influence exercise performance, previous studies were based on exercise programs targeting one main group of muscles, while the exercise program in this study incorporated the entire body.
